Forget School Choice, Blow Up the Bureaucracy Instead

|

School choice and vouchers sound like the ultimate solution, but they can’t scale fast enough to accommodate every child. Instead of hoping private and charter alternatives catch up, it’s time to dismantle the administrative bureaucracy within public education.

The capacity bottleneck is real. In Pinellas County, FL, 101 private schools serve ~21,000 students with massive waitlists, while 153 public school campuses face enrollment declines and have room to spare. Vouchers like Florida’s Step Up for Students are popular, but thousands remain trapped because of limited space or failed entry exams.

Splitting public funds across alternative providers dilutes resources and places a heavy “navigation barrier” on parents—forcing them through lotteries, admissions, and transportation hassles. Reforming existing public infrastructure leverages economies of scale for high-quality STEM labs and specialized programs.

Internal systemic reform provides 5 direct advantages:

  • Strips administrative bloat to redirect tax dollars to classrooms & teacher salaries
  • Grants school-level autonomy free from union/political red tape
  • Prevents resource dilution
  • Guarantees universal performance and accountability standards
  • Ensures every neighborhood child gets a top-tier education automatically

The path forward isn’t building thousands of new private campuses—it’s revitalizing the public schools we already have by refocusing time and money strictly on students.

Why wait decades for market competition to fix K-12 when we can legally strip away administrative bloat and reform public schools right now? Here’s how: https://owenerichasoniv.substack.com/p/forget-school-choice-blow-up-the
