Sure, you can take the scripted college tour. But use the opportunity to turn on detective mode. Real insights come from what you see and who you talk to. So, do this…
Start with the official guided tour… but use it to inspect the dorms closely:
Check for mold or weird odors
Make sure doors/windows actually open
Note the state of common areas, bathrooms, etc.
First impressions matter—dorms are home for 4 years!
Next level: Talk to the support staff—they know the REAL scoop and usually tell it straight.
Chat with maintenance crew:
“Which dorms are ice boxes in winter & saunas in summer?”
“How long does it take to fix reported problems?”
Honest answers save headaches later.
Bookstore employee → Ask about textbooks & supplies needed for your teen’s intended major. Get the real cost picture early (beyond the “estimated” tuition sheet).
Cafeteria staff are goldmines:
“What are the most/least popular menu items?”
“When’s the breakfast/lunch/dinner rush?”
This tells you actual food quality & crowd levels—way better than the marketing photos.
Ask security personnel directly for:
Campus safety overview
Most common incidents
Average response time in emergencies
No sugarcoating here—safety is non-negotiable.
Most important: Talk to CURRENT STUDENTS (not just the tour ambassadors). Ask:
What do you love about the school?
What drives you nuts?
Dorms, food, amenities, social scene?
Real students spill the unfiltered tea.
Don’t stop at the gates—drive/walk the surrounding neighborhood:
Is it safe & walkable?
Are there affordable hangouts, grocery stores, and things to do?
Off-campus life is a huge part of the experience.
Finally:
Do the academics truly fit your teen’s goals & learning style?
Does the campus “vibe” & culture feel right?
If one school clicks and another doesn’t—trust that gut feeling. It’s often the biggest piece of the puzzle.
Happy (detective) touring!
